While homeowners have a wide array of choices when it comes to roofing, fiberglass composition shingles represent one of the most popular, making up nearly 85 percent of all home roofing systems.
So what exactly are composition shingles? This type of roofing material features a fiberglass reinforcing mat at the center of the shingle, which is coated first with mineral fillers (that adhere to the fiberglass) and then with asphalt, which makes the shingle waterproof. The top surface of the shingle is then embedded with a layer of ceramic granules.
There are a couple of types of composition shingles that are the most popular.
#1. 3-Tab Shingles-
These are the most common & least expensive shingles. They appear as a one layer look with the 3 common flat tabs and have a manufacturer warranty of 25 years.
#2. Laminate Shingles- Also called Dimensional Shingles, these are a popular choice, considered to be an upgrade to the 3-tab shingle. They're similar to 3-tabs, except they feature a second tabbed layer, doubling the thickness giving the "dimensional" textured look many homeowners love. They have manufacturer warranties of 30 or 40 years.
Composition shingles are affordable and highly durable. They also come in a variety of colors, textures, and styles. Click the links below to learn more.
